About

The Schatz Building, at the southwest corner of Ontario Street and Fairbanks Court, is one of the last remaining loft buildings east of Michigan Avenue. With 15’-17’ ceilings and large-scale windows throughout, The Schatz Building offers tenants contemporary loft spaces, which are rare in the heart of Streeterville.

Family-owned and managed since 1949, the 73,000 square foot building has consistently attracted tenants from a variety of creative industries. In 1939, László Moholy-Nagy, former director of the New Bauhaus School in Chicago, opened the School of Design on the second floor. The school became the Institute of Design in 1944, and it remained in the building until 1949. From 1932 to 1960, the Chez Paree Night Club, located on the third floor of the building, played host to many of the world's best-known entertainers, including Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Sophie Tucker, and many others.

Today, the unique office spaces of the Streeterville landmark remain a creative home for film editing, a recording studio, web-based and real estate businesses. Eateries such as Potbelly, Chipotle, Indian Garden, West Egg Café, and Timothy O’Tooles are also located within the building.

The Schatz Building was designed in 1917 by architects Benjamin Marshall & Charles Eli Fox. Marshall & Fox were best known for their hotels, theaters, and luxury high-rise residences, including The Drake Hotel and The Blackstone Hotel and Theater. Nearing its 100th anniversary, the building is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation project under the guidance of Krueck+Sexton Architects. Many of the building’s original features, such as the stone detailing and dramatic windows will be retained and restored, while interior spaces will be modernized with the addition of contemporary finishes.
